Mackinac Island Day three マキノー島3日目

Day three was our going home day, but we thought we couldn’t turn back south again without crossing Mackinac bridge and seeing the real Upper Peninsula. We had almost no information on the area or attractions, but we headed north with great expectations…

We had gotten a breakfast burrito from a famous burger place right next to our hotel before leaving the island, so our first destination was Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse. There we found a nice bridge-view table ad had our gorgeous burritos – mine with egg and bacon, Taishi’s with egg and sausages. Blue sky, emerald lake, cute brick lighthouse, and delish burritos: a truly fantastic way to start the day!

Point Iroquois Lighthouse

Small, quiet and relaxing! This lighthouse was the only lighthouse we could actually climb up, and the surrounding area is very clean with a trail along the lake - just the right kind of place to stop and stretch your legs.

Whitefish Point Lighthouse and Whitefish bay

The place I was looking forward to the most! We had a good splashing session in Lake Superior. The white sand was beautiful and so was the clear blue water. Kanata, who had befriended Mr. Big Blue on the first day seemed excited about going into the water and Taishi was also delighted, saying “I love lakes! The water’s not salty so it dries off quickly and you don’t end up sticky afterwards!”

Tahquamenon Falls

This waterfall is located in a State Park and comes in two parts, lower and upper. We walked in the forest to see both, and although the falls were rather mediocre (we went to Victoria Falls for our honeymoon, so it was a tough competition), the forest walk was a good change from all the water and sand and I found the little spotting of rain refreshing.

Home. Ah yes, I nearly forgot we were supposed to be heading back home! So we rush back down south, and finally park our car in our garage at 11pm! Big hugs and kisses for Taishi who drove safely all day, and of course to Kanata for his wonderful behaviour and persevering mum and dad’s spontaneous and somewhat thoughtless detour. Having said that though, I really enjoyed being spontaneous on the road. Maybe we’ll rent a caravan and go for a real no plan venture sometime.

Mackinac Island Day Two マキノー島2日目

First things first, we joined the cue for the morning carriage tour around the state park that fills most of the island. The park was basically a cool forest, and together with the rocking of the horse carriage I found the tour very relaxing and healing.

The carriage tour also took us to a famous scenic attraction of the island – Arch rock. The huge natural bridge formation (dangerous to actually walk on!) with bright green foliage is admirable, especially with lake Huron stretching to the horizon behind. The contrast with the closed forest added to the beauty, too.

午後はまず曇り空の中Fort Mackinac(フォート・マキノー)を散策。

We started the afternoon with a wander around Fort Mackinac. The wander started with a long uphill climb and the fort was much bigger and full of exhibits than expected, but Kanata behaved great and walked all along with us. After the long walk in the sun we went to the café inside the fort looking down at the main street and harbour.

Is this a fort or a floating garden?

Having been in the sun for a good few hours we headed back to the hotel, buying fudge and other souvenirs on the way. However, when we sat down and had our bit of fudge we realized there was time to squeeze in one more activity – cycling around the island! As I hadn’t been on a bicycle for nearly two decades and had no confidence in biking, we rented a tandem and towed a trailer for Kanata. We did have a bit of rain but all in all, the bike ride was excellent: a great way to see and experience the island. With the road being much, much less crowded than on the main street or the fort, it was almost like having the island and lake all to our selves, and it felt good exercising my body. The area I live also being great for biking, I felt it was my mission to learn how to ride a bike again.

Phew, thought that was big horse poo.

Native Americans called this island Michilimackinac meaning land of the great turtle. This lovely fancy turtle is only one of countless turtle moifs found on the island.

Mackinac Island Day One
自転車!(後ろのプリティーな建物は図書館) bicycles!(the pretty building behind is the library)
Kanata explores the great lake for the first time.

For our first holiday in America we went to Mackinac Island, a small island you can only reach by water (or air) in Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes.
Mackinac Island is approximately a 5 hours drive (including lunch and pinkle-pause) and then 15 minutes on the ferry from where we live. At first we were worried how Kanata would cope being strapped to a child seat for so long. However, to our surprise, he actually coped very well. Just a mild break out of grumbling and crying but nothing a little toy or music couldn't cure.
For lunch we had pasties, and although they looked totally different from Cornish Pasties the taste was not bad.
One step out of the ferry and you cannot miss the small main street of the island bursting with colours: pastel coloured shops, hotels, and restaurants, and the place is filled with horse carriages, too. As we were not prepared for anything heavy after a long drive we decided to wonder around the main street and historic downtown. We also went into the lake, too. There was a place just off the main street where we could go right down to the lakefront so we took our shoes off and had a bit of a splash throwing stones and just feeling the cool water refresh our body. Aaaah, now this is what I call winding down! So soothing and just the right thing to do before a more active day ahead.

So, this is my new house in the US of A (I'm only uploading the back yard)
This probably a very average home here, but coming from Japan where houses are made in size of matchboxes, it really is unbelievable!
Another thing I like about the house is that I think it's very American - the white wall with the layered board exterior (obviously not real wood) and the black window shutters.  It's in Canada but it reminded me of Anne of Green Gables when I first saw it.
There were houses on our final list that were more European looking with bricks on the exterior (I heard that bricks are somewhat of a luxury here and the number/area of which it is used adds value to the house - how interesting!), but we decided on this house partly because of this American feel, and we are very happy about it ; )
So excited about all the things that are waiting to happen in this house.!

Kanata in Wonderland

This sweet park reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland is "Clematis-no-oka" or Clematis Hill. Clematis Hill is a spacious open air art museum consisting of five museums, a park, cafes and restaurants, and I often come here to lunch or enjoy hanami (spring picnic under cherry blossom trees). Hanami is particularly fun with temporary food stalls, games, and little concerts.
This time I visited Vangi museum with Haru. This museum also has indoor exhibits but the main feature has to be the lovely garden exhibit.  The garden consists of a structural area as seen in the pic and a big grass area with a pond and flowers, all with huge art works placed spaciously and in harmony with the landscape - aahh, I thought I could stay there all day.
After absorbing the healing powers of Vangi museum and park we then delighted our stomach at Ciao Ciao, a pizzeria just outside the museum.
Clematis Hill never fails to satisfy me both from the inside and out - definitely one of my favourite places in the Fuji-Susono area.

Formula One Japanese Grand Prix!

Half a year since the online ticket reservation... Formula One has finally, really, arrived at Fuji!!Despite the bad weather we went to the circuit for three days and enjoyed the magical event to the full : ) Our seat, fortunately, was not the notorious "C" (The most expensive seat which was paid back after complaints that the spectators cannot atualy see the race) but "F", located around the 100R and hairpin corners. This seat, which received a three-star rating by a Japanese F1 magazine, was indeed fantastic as we were able to witness Alonso's crash (thank God he was uninjured!) and Raikkonen's dramatic overtake live - so personal extra two stars for seat "F" from me!
However!! and this is the really important part. As some of you may already know from various news reports etc, all the excitement and joy melted down to a magma of anger after having forced to wait 4.5 hours for a shuttle bus to get to Gotemba station. (This Grand Prix adopted a "ticket/park & ride" system, which requires spectators to go to a designated bus station and catch a shuttle bus from there.) Nonetheless, the race itself and facility was brilliant, and the Grand Prix is going to be held at Fuji next year, too. So let's hope that management will analyse the mistake this year and work towards a better GPX next year.

Holiday in L.A.

Just a bunch of blurs for those who weren't here...

Bless♪
Junko & Jon,

Day Five...
Final day in L.A.! After a late morning and lazy packing for the following day, we went to Hermosa beach, this time in swim suits, for Taishi to try surfing for the first time. By the time we arrived where Junko guided us, she was already in the sea practising how to make a turn. Go Junko! I didn't join in as I'm a little scared of the waves but Taishi seemed to have had great fun. Thanks Jon for coaching him and lending us your board! While Taishi was splashing around Aoki-san; Taishi's old school mate who had come all the way up from San Diego just for today, arrived. It was a great afternoon, everybody soaking up the sun or tumbling in the waves as they liked, and sharing fruit salad and potato chips as if we had known each other for ages.
With the sun starting to sink rapidly, we finally left the beach to get changed for dinner at a Peruvian Restaurant. There Jon's friend Bart joined us and we all enjoyed delicious food and excellent company, but this was just the start of our “last supper” in L.A.... After dinner we went to Cold Stone Creamery for dessert and then to karaoke in a desperate attempt to burn off all the excess calories we had taken! Also, Jon had said we should go to karaoke when I told him I took vocal training lessons. Jon was, to my surprise, a very eager singer and seemed to enjoy choosing and singing each song while the rest of us were struggling to remember the title or just think of a good English song we can actually sing along to: bless♪
So this is where our heavenly holiday in L.A. ends. I really cannot thank Junko and Jon enough for their hospitality. Thanks so so so so much for having us and promise you will come stay at ours when you come visit Japan!

Holiday in L.A.

Day Four...
Wehey it's the weekend! Junko's free and Igechy is coming to join us from NY! With Junko and I in desperate need for a girly shop-and-talk-till-we-drop time, and Taishi (and Igechy, too, from the number of bags he ended up with!) wanting to clothes shop, too, there was nowhere else to go but Desert Hills Premium Outlets.
After charging energy for the long shopping day with taco for me and hamburger for Taishi (first junk food this holiday, yum!), Junko and I swiftly switched to shopping mode and declared “Girls only time”, leaving Taishi and Igechy to finish their food and hopefully a good boys’ jam session. With designer's labels like Mark Jacobs, Rebecca Taylor, Max Mara etc all in affordable prices, round one of our shopping spree was filled with excitement and craziness. But nothing came close to Elie Tahari, one of Junko’s and now my favourite shops; we were in the shop for at least 2 hours! Round two started when we were reunited with Taishi and Igechy and went denim-crazy at True Religion. Taishi ended up buying two pairs, and I also got one thanks to Junko who dug through all the shelves for a small size! I also enjoyed dress shopping with Taishi, too, and left the mall with countless clothes and revving adrenalin(^ ^) Oh, by the way it was a great relief that Taishi and Igechy seemed to have enjoyed shopping on their own. For those of you on the look, I highly recommend a man who enjoys shopping!
For dinner we went to a Steak & Grill restaurant The Fallsin Palms Springs (lamb for me and prime rib for Taishi) and got home safely under a spectacular starry sky.

Holiday in L.A.

Barely alive at Babylon Court...

Day Three...
Leave the apartment with plans to see The Grove⇒Hollywood⇒Melrose ave. Driving through Rodeo Drive on the way(slowly, thanks to traffic jam. It was particularly nice to see De Beers where we got our marriage ring ), we arrived at The Grove in time for lunch and had pancakes at an antique looking café Marmalade Café and also shopped a little. After this mini-stop it was finally time to see Hollywood! However when we finally came out from the parking lot, my first impression was how tiny Hollywood was, and it was also shocking that Hollywood was actually a big duty free shopping mall rather than an entertainment facility dedicated to movies. We did not see as many people in costumes either. But we walked around the mall and along the Walk of Fame etc nonetheless, and as a result... we both ended up having heat exhaustion! This was a problem considering our final destination Melrose, which is like the Harajuku / Aoyama district. In an attempt to recharge our energy we went to Pinkberry, a frozen yogurt shop recommended by Junko and the yogurt was indeed scrumptious but didn’t ease our exhaustion. So in total desperation for a decent shade and A/C we evacuated to the Beverly Center, the THIRD shopping mall of the day!!! It was disappointing that we couldn’t see Melrose properly, but thanks to the long “pause” at Beverly Center (we literally sank into a sofa and didn’t move for at least an hour!) we were able to enjoy lovely Italian food and wine at DOLCE, a famous Italian place in Melrose we had reserved for that night.
There is definitely something about the third day of holidays for me. I rememberthrowing up on the third of my honeymoon in South Africa, also due to fatigue. I must keep this in mind when I go somewhere next time!

Holiday in L.A.

A kettle, clothes, grocery... and we call ourselves tourists!

Day Two...
Off to Santa Monica with a rented Yaris. It's have fun go mad shopping day after lunch at Le Pain Quotidien. We spent the day mainly on the Third Street Promenade, and we also went down to the beach for a breezy walk along the pier and beach. The cheesy stalls and street performers were fun to watch. Home/kitchen ware shops like Sur La Tableand Artichokes & Co. that I had found in Japan were great fun to look around and we also got most of our presents there. My best shop of the day was ANTHROPOLOGIE, a beautiful clothes shop with a rustic/hippy but classy twist. After a longer than expected stay on Third Street, we finally left to go to an outdoors equipment and accessories shop for Taishi’s shopping. By the time we’d gone through all the agenda for the day it was late, we were too knackered to dine out, and we also had loads of leftovers we took home from yesterday lunch and dinner. So we went to “Whole Foods Market” for final present and grocery shopping and returned home around 21:30 for a relaxed meal at home. The food was obviously good and Jon kindly offered to share his wine. So we all sat down in front of the telly like we had lived together like this for ages. I love these homely moments you can never experience at hotels.
